New updates are being added at the bottom of this story…….

Original story (published on August 05, 2022) follows:

Brave is one of the most popular Chromium-based web browsers available. Many prefer it over options like Chrome for various reasons, such as its better handling of hardware resources.

Brave Browser even allows users to earn crypto tokens (BAT) for using it, which can be exchanged for real money just like other tokens.

It is also available on multiple mobile and desktop platforms like Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS.

However, currently Brave Browser users on macOS are facing an issue where Google Docs, Sheets and other sites are not working or loading.

Brave Browser Google Docs, Sheets and other sites not opening on Mac

For a few days now, Brave Browser users on macOS are receiving a ‘Home screen is temporarily unavailable’ error when trying to access mainly Google Docs and Sheets.

It seems that a recent Brave Browser update brought the bug.

Some reports suggest that the problem occurs to people using the MetaMask extension. MetaMask is basically a crypto wallet where you can store and transfer crypto coins through the Ethereum network.

I’m not completely sure, but it seems that after the latest Brave update, I’m not able to open any Google Doc or Sheet file. It says “Unable to load file” and even though I refresh the page, doesn’t seem to work. I’ve also tried deleting cache. Source

However, there are reports of users not using MetaMask but dealing with the same bug.

Google Docs, Google Sheets, and other related GSuite products aren’t working due to formatting issues that only started early this morning. This issue appears on all Docs and all Sheets without exception. Source

Issue acknowledged and a couple of workarounds

If you are one of the affected MetaMask extension users (or the extension of some other crypto wallet), you can try disabling as a temporary workaround:

Fortunately, an engineer from the Brave team confirmed that they are already working on a fix:

Brave Settings -> Wallet -> Default cryptocurrency wallet -> None

It works for me.

Google Document and Spreadsheet pages also work fine now. Word/Excel might be so. Source

Meanwhile, you can also try the GitHub test-plan proposed by the same Brave engineer:

We will update this story once new events emerge on the matter.
