When DI Jimmy Perez left Shetland at the end of season 7, this popular detective drama was almost destroyed. Fortunately, the BBC still believes in the show enough to have renewed it for an additional season, even without the lead actor who has been with the show for the past 9 years.
It was nice of BBC to inform us of this renewal before season 7 premiered, allowing us to avoid fretting about the show’s future in the wake of Douglas Henshall’s departure.

Release Date
The BBC revealed that shooting for the upcoming episodes of Shetland season 8 will begin during the spring of 2023. Cast
The sources have stated that after Jimmy’s unexpected departure, a new lead would be introduced. Tosh, who is portrayed by Alison O’Donnell, is the most obvious option. The time is right for Jimmy’s right-hand woman, who has been there from the start, to move up and succeed her mentor.
