Extraction is getting a sequel with its main star, Chris Hemsworth, set to reprise the role of Tyler Rake. The character was thought to be killed in action during the final moments of the last Netflix film, but a very ominous final shot showed a blurred figure that resembled Rake standing by the water before the movie cut to the credits.

Netflix moved forward on an Extraction sequel not long after the success of the first film in 2020. The first film had set up a few minor plot beats that have the potential to be explored, but overall, Extraction made sure to tie up the main plot.

Because of the open-ended conclusion of Extraction, fans couldn’t help but make think pieces, deep-dive videos, and theories about how Hemsworth’s character survived. Now it seems the creators want Extraction to be part of a new cinematic universe, which is similar to how the John Wick franchise turned out. Hemsworth’s return as Tyler Rake was already confirmed in a short Extraction 2 teaser, but there’s was next to nothing else as far as details go. Now, a few stills were released to mark the first day of shooting, which show Tyler Rake in the snowy Czech Republic boarding what looks like to be a high-speed moving train. The second picture and video showed both Hemsworth as well as returning director Sam Hargrave standing on the side platform of the moving vehicle.

How the character survived, what he will do next, and what the plot of the next Extraction film will be are all up in the air for open speculation. One thing for certain is that fans will know a lot more once the film finishes shooting. Hemsworth has been preparing for Extraction 2 even more seriously than for the last film, so fans are hopefully in for another great weekend watch when this movie releases.

Now that the environment has changed, fans can expect a whole new scenery for the combat. The first Extraction is full of claustrophobic chase scenes and gun shootouts in the hot city of Dhaka, Bangladesh, and those will be exchanged for a much colder as well as bitter environment of the open fields. Since it’s an action movie, fans should still expect to see some close-quarter hand-to-hand combat when this film hits Netflix

One thing that is certain is that Extraction 2 will be coming out in either 2022 or possibly 2023 since the film will undoubtedly continue filming into the new year. The first film broke records and was the most-watched Netflix Original movie of all time last year, managing to bring in over 99 million household views.

Extraction 2 is currently in production.
