Two more actors have joined the already star-studded cast of director Christopher Nolan’s next film, Oppenheimer. Star Wars actor Alden Ehrenreich and actor/comedian David Krumholtz have joined the cast of the Universal Pictures film.

Prior to landing the role in Universal’s Oppenheimer, Ehrenreich previously starred as a young Han Solo in Disney’s second Stars Wars spinoff film, Solo: A Star Wars Story. He also starred in the Coen brothers’ 1950s Hollywood farce, Hail, Caesar! in which he played a young singing cowboy who struggled to perform in a more dramatic role. Krumholtz is an actor and comedian best known for his role as a crime-solving mathematical genius in the CBS mystery series Numbers. More recently, he played a 1970s porn director on all three seasons of the David Simon HBO series The Deuce. He’s also known for his comedic roles in the Seth Rogen produced comedies This is the End and Superbad, as well as the Tim Allen Santa Clause movies.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news about their casting, but it is unclear who Ehrenreich and Krumholtz will play in Nolan’s epic biopic. They join an already stacked Oppenheimer cast of Hollywood A-Lister’s including Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Rami Malek, Benny Safdie, Josh Hartnett, Dane DeHaan, Jack Quaid, Matthew Modine, and Cillian Murphy as famed theoretical scientist Robert J Oppenheimer. The film, which has been described by Universal Pictures as an epic thriller, tells the story of “the theoretical physicist who helped develop the Atomic bomb during World War II, but later found his loyalty to the country questioned by hawkish government officials.”

This will be Nolan’s first film to be distributed by Universal Pictures. In 2020 the Academy Award-nominated director had a falling out with Warner Bros. Pictures, who have distributed all of Nolan’s previous films since 2002. Nolan expressed dissatisfaction with the company’s decision to release its 2021 films simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters. Other directors, including Dune director Denis Villeneuve, have expressed similar concerns.

Nolan is known for his use of IMAX film, which he has used to capture massive and epic scenes in films such as his award-winning WWII epic Dunkirk, The Dark Knight trilogy, and the science fiction epic Interstellar. Nolan’s next film will also make use of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film. He is also once again collaborating with his longtime cinematographer Hoyte Van Hoytema, who has worked on several of Nolan’s previous films including Dunkirk and Tenet. Oppenheimer has reportedly begun production and is currently filming in New Mexico.

Oppenheimer is scheduled for theatrical release on July 21st, 2023.
